Port-Cartier

Port-Cartier

As the second most important urban centre in Duplessis, Port-Cartier is an industrial centre nestled between the forest and the sea. It comprises the sectors of Pointe-aux-Anglais and Rivière-Pentecôte. In Pointe-aux-Anglais, the Musée Louis-Langlois explains how the English failed their attack on Quebec in 1711. The Stations of the Cross in the church of the village were sculpted by Médard Bourgault, an artist from Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, and are truly remarkable.

The picturesque village of Rivière-Pentecôte invites you to visit its interpretation centre as well as its small church and its oratory built on a cape overlooking the sea. The Port-Cartier area, first known as “Portage-des-Mousses”, then “Shelter Bay”, was originally living off the forest industry, of which we can see the remnants on Île Patterson. Later, in 1957, the town later became an important mining centre. Rivers dotted with small islands separate the city in two sectors, which gives it a unique character. Designated trails offering a breathtaking view on the waterfalls and on the dam of the rivière aux Rochers give an excellent opportunity for photographers and bird watchers to do their favourite activities. The Île McCormick hosts the Café-Théâtre Graffiti, an astonishing open air stage surrounded by the beach and a rocky landscapes. You can also see the Lady Era wreck that ran aground in 1977.

Among other attractions, visit the Centre d’interprétation de l’histoire de Port-Cartier (located in the basement of the Sacré-Coeur church), the parc de la Rivière aux Rochers – Piège à Saumon and the réserve faunique de Port-Cartier – Sept-Îles. This reserve invites you to discover the majestic lac Walker and the hanging bridge that leads to the MacDonald waterfall. You can also go swimming, canoeing, hiking or have a picnic. Depending on the season you choose to visit the region, you can go fishing as well as moose and small game hunting.
