Port-Menier

There is only one village on the Île d'Anticosti, Port-Menier, which dates back to 1899. It was founded after Menier, a rich chocolate maker, decided to abandon what was then called Baie-Sainte-Claire, a village where the ruins of some former houses can still be seen. Menier imported different animal species to the island, such as beavers, foxes, moose and white-tailed deer, whose livestock nowadays reaches more than 120,000 animals. It’s a real natural paradise covering some 8,000 km2! The “trans-anticostienne” road, built over the years by the many forest companies, allow you to cross the island from one end to the other. Along the road, you will discover canyons, rivers, caves, waterfalls, and many outfitters.

Amateur and expert bird watchers can observe more than 220 species of birds, including the bald eagle, which has become a very rare species. Botanists and plant lovers will also be pleased by the large number of rare plants, including some that are unique to the island. Amateur geologists will also be pleased by the flat rock strands and the countless number of fossils. throughout the centuries, more than 200 ships were wrecked on the reefs surrounding the island, and many remnants of these wrecks are still visible nowadays. Several lighthouses were erected on the coast avoid other shipwrecks. Nowadays, many of these lighthouses have been transformed into colourful inns for visitors. The island also hosts some campgrounds for nature lovers. Some attractions must not be missed on the island, including the Château Menier, the island’s architectural treasure; the Économusée d’Anticosti and the parc national d’Anticosti where you can visit the Vauréal waterfall, the canyon de l’Observation and that of la Chicotte, as well as the Grotte-à-la-Patate
